2020 is the year we get a new generation of games consoles, so it should come as no surprise sales of the PlayStation 4 are beginning to falter.
As The Verge reports, Sony just released its Q3 2019 financial results and there's a lot of negatives. PlayStation division revenue is down by 20 percent due to falling hardware and software sales. For the most important quarter of the year, PS4 sales dropped by 25 percent compared to the holiday season last year. PS4 holiday sales reached their highest point back in 2016 when Sony shipped 9.7 million consoles.
Sony won't be too worried, though. It still managed to ship 6.1 million consoles during the quarter and a total of 14.7 million last year, taking the lifetime total to 108.9 million. The PS4 now sits fourth in the game consoles sales record behind the Game Boy, Nintendo DS, and PS2. It seems likely the PS4 will move into third place before the end of its life because the Game Boy total sits within touching distance at 118.69 million.
As 2020 continues, Sony's focus will turn increasingly away from the PS4 and on to the PS5 which is launching for the holiday season. However, the PS4 hasn't received a price cut since 2016, so there's a chance Sony could choose to give its current gen console one more sales push by lowering its price. Right now the official price of the PS4($258.85 at Amazon) is $299.99 and the PS4 Pro($319.79 at Amazon) is $399.99. Sony may choose to lower both by $50, allowing retailers to go even lower. A $200 PS4 would be extremely popular, though, if Sony chose to be aggressive.
